Smart Links overview

What are Smart Links?

Smart Links are a special type of link which appear on many Quercus screens.

Smart Links are links which can take you to:

another screen within the current module

another Quercus module

any other internal or external web address (e.g. your institution’s intranet home page; the Home pages of HESA or UCAS)

They are called Smart Links because:

you will only see a link if you have the correct access permissions

certain links to other Quercus 8 modules will appear only if there is relevant information at the link destination

your context will be maintained — the information displayed on the destination page will relate to the particular record you were reviewing when you clicked the link

These properties are discussed in more detail below.

Smart Link properties

You will only see a link if you have permission to access the application in question

You can configure a Smart Link so that it is visible only to members of particular LDAP groups. You do this by entering a list of LDAP groups in the User Role field of the Smart Link set-up screen. If you leave the field empty the Smart Link will be visible to all users.

Certain links to other Quercus 8 modules will appear only if there is relevant information at the link destination

We can best understand this feature by considering the following requirement:

“If you are viewing a student’s record in the main STUDENTS tab, a link to the Admissions module should appear only if there is an Admissions record for the student in question.”

Smart Links support this requirement, allowing you to maintain conditional links between Quercus 8 modules. A conditional link will only be displayed if there is information relating to the current record at the link destination.

Your context will be maintained

If we extend the above requirement so that

“The link should take you straight to the selected student’s Admission’s record.”

then the link will need to pass the student’s identifier through to the Admissions module so that the relevant admissions record can be displayed.

Smart Links support this feature, so that context can be maintained when moving from one application to another.
