Using Online Results Entry


In order to enter results, you use the Online Results Entry screen. This shows a list of students associated with a particular module and allows you to enter the gross results and penalties for each student. Nett and weighted marks are calculated automatically when the screen is submitted.

You can enter results in either anonymous or non-anonymous modes. If you are entering results in anonymous mode you will not see the names of the students, only their exam numbers.

Accessing the Online Results Entry screen

You can access the Online Results Entry screen through COURSES or MODULES.

if you access Online Results Entry through the COURSES you will only see the results that relate to the selected course instance.

If you access Online Results Entry through MODULES you will see the results from all the course instances associated with the MODULE.

To access Online Results Entry from COURSES

1Select the COURSES tab in QuercusPlus.

2Locate the course instance for which you want to enter results and select View.

3Select the Modules tab, to see a list of modules with which the course instance is associated.

4In the Assessment column, click a view icon to view the results associated with the course instance.

A column will display the overall unit mark once it is entered/calculated in Quercus Classic Interface.

Results that have been finalised and approved (via results entry in QuercusPlus Classic Interface) and can no longer be changed are indicated by a lock icon. In the example above the records of Maria Collins and Mary Cunningham are locked. The status column will also be unavailable for updating for locked results.

Note: you can ensure that results are locked automatically once the calculator is run by setting the AUTO_LOCK_RESULTS_IN_USE QuercusPlus Global parameter to TRUE via the Control Centre.

Multiple assessments may be shown for a given course. A tab appears for each assessment. You can move to hidden tabs by clicking the Next button at the top of the tabs.

The assessment weight is displayed on the assessment labels after the assessment type. The weight is displayed in brackets after the label (in the screen above the weights are.1,.2,.2 and.1).

You can sort the list of students by clicking on the First Name, Surname or ID Number column headings.

The exams associated with the different stages of the learning process can be accessed by choosing options from the Sitting pick list.

The signifiance of the columns are listed below:

First Name, Surname, ID Number

Student identification details (only shown if the USE_ANONYMOUS_MARKING parameter is set to FALSE)

Exam Number

Number of the exam entry (only shown if the USE_ANONYMOUS_MARKING parameter is set to TRUE)

Module Result

The module result is calculated by the exams calculator from all associated assessment results.

The calculation is triggered manually from the Classic Interface.


The mark the student received in the exam, prior to any penalties and independent of any weighting.

If the assessment mode is pass/fail then:

selecting Pass sets the gross value to the assessment pass mark

selecting Fail sets the gross value to zero


The gross mark after adjustment for any penalty.


Status can be is used to flag results which have been affected by specific circumstances. The list of statuses available is configurable through the Classic Interface.

The status may optionally be used to modify the calculation of the overall module result in order to enforce institution specific academic rules.

5Click an edit icon on a column header tab to open the Assessments screen associated with the assessment method.

The Assessments screen opens.

If the assessment is a scored assessment it will look like this.

If the assessment is a pass/fail assessment it will look like this.

To access Online Results Entry from MODULES

1Select MODULES.

2Use the search function to locate the module you want to open. Clicking the More Options box allows you to access the following additional search options:

Tutor — allows you show modules associated with a particular tutor

Status — allows you to show modules with a particular status

Tip: if you don’t see the modules you’re expecting to see, click More Options and review the settings of the various search options.

3Click the View icon to open the module.

The Module Instance Overview screen opens.

4Select the Assessments tab.

A summary of the results is displayed (results which cannot be changed will show a lock icon).

5From the Assessment Sitting pick list, select a sitting.

6Click the icon to open the Assessments screen.

The Assessments screen opens.

Entering results

The Assessments screen allows you to enter assessment results. An assessment may a scored assessment, which requires that you enter a percentage score for the assessment or a pass/fail assessment which requires that you choose between pass or fail.

To enter results for assessments

1If the assessment is a scored assessment enter the appropriate marks in the Gross and Penalty% field. (If there is no penalty you can leave the Penalty% field empty.)

The pass mark, maximum mark and weighting factor are shown in the header above the list.

If the assessment is a pass/fail assessment enter Choose Pass or Fail from the Pass/Fail pick list.

2Select a status from the Status pick list. This is important if the student has, for some reason, failed to complete an exam.

3If you wish to associate a note with the result:

aClick the Note icon.

bChoose a Note type from the Note Type list.

cEnter the note.

dClick Add.

4When you have finished entering marks, click Save or Confirm Results (see below).

The screen is refreshed, with the Nett and Weighted figures calculated.

Save or Confirm Results?

After you have edited a set of results in Quercus Menu you can click Save or Confirm Results.

Saving the results stores your edits in the database but does not commit them as final. You can change them later if you wish.

Confirming the results commits them as final and definite and locks the records.

Student assessment notes

Notes can be viewed by users with the following roles:



The More Information icon will be displayed if there is an open object note set against the persons assessment record

Status column to be view only

A new QLIVE global parameter RESULTS_ENTRY_STATUS has been introduced to manage the status column on assessment entry screen

True — result status can be edited

False — result status cannot be edited

Audit trail of actions

The Audit tab on the Results Entry screen lists all Save and Confirm Results actions (see Save or Confirm Results?) relating to the selected result-set.
